Treasure Hunt: The Ultimate One-Day Flea Market Road Trip Through Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia

Some people plan vacations around beaches. Around here, we plan them around folding tables covered in treasure.

Appalachia's Front Porch, where Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia meet along the Ohio River, happens to sit on top of one of the densest clusters of flea markets in the region. Six of the best are close enough together that you can hit every single one in a single Saturday, and the drive between any two of them is shorter than your average Target run. Bring cash, bring a big trunk, and bring your patience for one very determined vendor who will not let you leave without that lamp.

Here is how to do the whole loop in one day.

Before You Go: Pick Your Day

Do this trip on a Saturday. Three of these six markets are only open Thursday through Sunday or Friday through Sunday, and Saturday is the one day every single stop on this list is guaranteed to be open. Carter County Flea Market in Grayson does not keep consistent posted hours, so it is also worth a quick call before you head out, and mornings are when regulars say it is liveliest.

Morning | Carter County Flea Market, Grayson, KY

Start at the southern end of the loop and work your way north. Carter County Flea Market at 4101 KY-7 in Grayson is the kind of old-school flea market that has been around long enough to have regulars who have been coming since they were kids. Expect a mix of new and used household goods, small appliances, toys, dishes, clothes, furniture, antiques, and collectibles, spread across indoor booths and a first-come, first-served covered outdoor area.

This is not a polished, curated antique mall. It is a genuine dig-through-the-piles flea market, and that is exactly the appeal. Go early, since the best finds tend to disappear by midday, and call ahead at (606) 474-8439 to confirm they are open before you make the drive.

Insider Tip:Reviewers consistently say Carter County Flea Market is best in the morning and best when the weather cooperates. If it is raining, some outdoor booths may not set up, so a clear morning is your best bet for the full experience.

Next stop: Head north on I-64 to Ashland, about 25 miles and 28 minutes away.

Midday | Hillbilly Flea Market, Ashland, KY

227 Russell Rd, Ashland, KY (Westwood) | Open Thursday through Sunday, roughly 9am to 5pm.

Hillbilly Flea Market earns its name honestly, in the best possible sense. It is an eclectic, sprawling mix of permanent indoor booths and spacious outdoor vendor space, wheelchair accessible, and full of the kind of variety that makes flea market shopping addictive. You will find everything from tools and housewares to vintage collectibles and straight-up junk drawer treasures.

This is a good stop to stretch your legs and grab lunch nearby before crossing back into Ohio. One of the best, locally owned coffee shops is just across the street. Check out Pour House Coffee for a bite to eat or a beverage to walk with.

Next stop: Cross the river and head to Chesapeake, Ohio, about 19 minutes away

Afternoon | Chesapeake Flea Market, Chesapeake, OH

10917 Co Rd 1, Chesapeake, OH | Open Friday through Sunday, 9am to 5pm

Chesapeake Flea Market leans a little more toward antiques, vintage finds, and local artisan goods than a straight junk-and-jumble market, which makes it a nice change of pace after Hillbilly. Admission is free, the vendor selection is wide, and it is the kind of place where you go in looking for nothing in particular and come out with something specific.

Next stop: Proctorville is just a few miles up the road, about 7 minutes away.

Afternoon | Proctorville Flea Market, Proctorville, OH

90 N Jones St, Proctorville, OH | Open Friday through Sunday

Proctorville Flea Market keeps things simple: a solid rotation of vendors, wheelchair-accessible grounds, plenty of parking, and cash-friendly booths. It is small enough to move through quickly, which makes it an easy add to the route without eating up your whole afternoon. Since hours can shift by vendor, a quick call to (740) 886-7606 before you leave Chesapeake is a smart move.

Next stop: Cross back into West Virginia and head to Huntington, about 8 to 10 minutes away.

Late Afternoon | Huntington Peddlers Mall, Huntington, WV

800 14th St W, Huntington, WV | Open 7 days a week, Monday through Thursday 10am to 6pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 8pm, Sunday 11am to 7pm

By the time you roll into Huntington, you will be glad Peddlers Mall keeps some of the longest hours on this whole list. This is a full-scale flea market housed indoors, with vendors covering antiques, vintage goods, furniture, clothing, home decor, new mattresses, oddities, and crafts. The staff has a reputation for being genuinely friendly and helpful, which matters a lot when you are five stops deep into a treasure hunt and running out of steam.

Next stop: Sue's Junk & Antique Mall is minutes away in West Huntington.

Evening | Sue's Junk & Antique Mall, Huntington, WV

459 Camden Rd, West Huntington, WV | Open Wednesday through Sunday 8am to 6pm, Monday and Tuesday 12pm to 5pm

Save the biggest for last. Sue's Junk & Antique Mall is a 31,000-square-foot warehouse packed with more than 400 vendors, and it has been voted Best in the Tri-State two years running. Antiques, collectibles, furniture, jewelry, vintage clothing, tools, and household items fill every corner, with outside vendor sales running Wednesday through Sunday for anyone who still has room in the trunk.

This is the stop where you will want the most time and the most energy, so it earns its spot as the grand finale.

Insider Tip: Sue's runs a layaway program, so if you find something big that will not fit in the car today, you do not have to leave it behind for good. Ask a staff member how it works before you walk away from that dresser.
