Trails of Water, Song, and Freedom

The Appalachian Freedom Initiative is a nine-county, three-state initiative to locate and document Underground Railroad sites in the tri-state region of Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia.

Running through seven eastern counties in Kentucky, the Country Music Highway is a beautiful 150-mile National Scenic Byway along U.S. 23 that has produced more million-selling singers than any other region per capita in the world!

The Ohio River Way is a 308-mile National Water Trail that winds through Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, linking river towns, wilderness and cultural sites. It immerses paddlers and shoreline explorers in rich history while celebrating vibrant riverside communities found along the way.

Learn about the Battle of Point Pleasant and Gallipolis, a French settlement present when Meriwether passed by in September 1803. Take a stroll in historic Ashland, Kentucky and enjoy one of its many locally owned shops and restaurants. Finish the day at Portsmouth, Ohio at the center of ancient, and present, travel ways and cultures.

NEKY HERITAGE DRIVING TOUR

This tour connects a series of prehistoric and historic cultural landmarks representing Native, European, and African American history in Northeast Kentucky. The main corridor extends along a 40-mile stretch of the Ohio River between the Scioto and Big Sandy Rivers in Greenup and Boyd Counties.

This tour begins at the Adena Burial Mounds in Central Park in Ashland, KY. Pamplets can be obtained at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center in Ashland, KY.
